My name is Jake Cousins, I work for Gibbs Gears. My employer is a manufacturer and my role is CNC programming. How did you come to be an Apprentice? I had been looking since I left school, but I struggled to find one straight away, so did a year at college and when I finished that, I found the apprenticeship. My brother had done an apprenticeship – he is a bit older than me – so he guided me as to what I needed to know and what I should be looking for. What do you gain from an apprenticeship? […]

Mechanical Engineering Apprentice – Martin Baker Aircraft Company
I chose to become a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice because I didn’t want to stay at school any longer and wanted to work and earn money, but still want to continue with my education. An Apprenticeship allows my to do both of these things. My Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship started with 8 weeks foundation at ATG Training. Following this I go to my employer where I’ll be studying for my BTEC & NVQ. My ambition is to continue learning whilst working towards and achieving an HNC in Mechanical Engineering. When I reach that level I intend to continue my studies and achieve a Master’s Degree, all […]
Focus On… Mechanical Machining & CNC Precision Engineering Apprenticeships
Engineering Apprenticeships are a great route into a wide number of industries. CNC Engineering or Computer Numerical Control Engineering is a specialisation in Mechanical Engineering which allows for computer controlled machining, programming the movement of the tools to complete precision tasks. During a Mechanical Machining & CNC Precision Engineering Apprenticeship you will primarily work with metal however you could potentially work with wood, composite materials and plastics. Typical duties include: Programming the machine tool with data taken from technical drawings Planning out the machine operations for each job to maximise efficiency Ensuring the right tools are used for each stage […]
How far can Vocational Training take you?
Simply put, as far as you want as long as your drive and determination exists. Take the case of Fay Chicken who in April 2014 takes up a position with CERN in Geneva in the radiation safety office working with X-Rays. CERN is the location where Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 and Professor Brian Cox – BBC physics presenter – is currently working on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Why become an apprentice? Finishing school or leaving college is a daunting prospect for many young people as they face major decisions that […]
