Emphasising the continued upturn that apprenticeship schemes are now playing as a serious viable route to successful careers, the world renowned university establishment of Oxford are now promoting their apprenticeship scheme. The scheme has been running for the last few years and has grown from three in 2009 to seventeen in 2014 with more to be advertised. The University, who utilise ATG Training’s facilities for some of their apprenticeships, are the largest employer in Oxfordshire with an estimated annual £750 million injection into the local economy and their burgeoning apprenticeship scheme shows how seriously the University is looking at apprenticeships to maintain this standing within the area.

The University are aiming for all of their seventy eight departments to have at least one apprenticeship running in each. “Our apprenticeships are not just in the traditional technician and engineering subjects” explains Oxford University’s Apprenticeship Manager, Clive Shepherd, “they are now in the arts, humanities, medical sciences, administration, HR, IT, social and digital media, marketing and a whole host of other subjects.”

The University of Oxford runs the apprenticeships for three years with a typical term week being split between four days working in the department that they are learning the apprenticeship and one day spent in college. Recent apprenticeships within the University’s departments have included audio-visual media, Building Services technician, electronics workshop technician, laboratory technician and mechanical workshop technician.
