A fantastic opportunity has become available in the Department of Physics’ workshop for an engineering technician apprentice. You will train in a range of Mechanical technician disciplines, machining, fitting and cryogenic systems both in the workshop and on site. Working with and providing support to the workshops for the purpose of building the mechanical parts for larger particle physics detectors ( ATLAS detector, LHCb at CERN), Astrophysics telescope instruments (HARMONI at the ELT southern observatory) and in house Laboratory experiments. You will be working on new modern CNC machines as well as the more traditional hand crafts of fitting and building the devices.

Becoming an Apprentice at the University of Oxford is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience and training.

Responsibilities

 

  • To take stage by stage instructions from an experienced technician, in order to independently complete basic technical tasks.

     

  • Learn to safely operate basic manual machines and equipment and seeking assistance from more experienced technicians when required.

     

  • To continue undertaking training and practical work across the department of physics, in some of the following functions:

     

  • Working under instruction on:

     

                - A standard range of manual metal working machines such as: lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, saws and sheet metal equipment.

     

                - The assembly of scientific equipment, metrology of finished components and the use of             CNC equipment.

     

  • To work at all times with due care to the requirements of health and safety relevant to the work being carried out at any time.

Training to be Provided

Level 3 BTEC in Engineering

Level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Engineering

10 week Foundation Training at ATG Training in Aylesbury

Level 1 Functional Maths, English & ICT (if applicable).

  • Able to demonstrate an aptitude for the skills taught in the Apprenticeship (for example through work experience, qualifications or references)

  • Able to evidence the use of a practical skill or craft

  • Experience of Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel


Qualifications Required

5 x GCSEs at grades A*-C (English, Maths and a Sciences grade C or equivalent)
