As part of Labour’s Party conference in Manchester, leader Ed Miliband said that Apprenticeships would be one of his party’s “national goals” if they were in government.  Mr Miliband stated that he would like to see the number of apprentices match the number of university goers by 2025 as part of a 10 year plan to transform the UK. Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat Business Secretary last week launched a new campaign to support apprenticeships. The ‘Get In. Go Far’ campaign is designed to encourage more young people into Apprenticeships by showcasing the huge variety of Apprenticeships available and the quality of the training and qualifications gained through vocational training. The UK government has committed to investing £30 million in the engineering sector, with particular focus on increasing the supply of engineers, inspiring women to join the sector and eliminating skills shortages in small engineering businesses. Encouraging more women into ‘male’ apprenticeships

New research by a leading think tank has suggested that it could help to close the gender pay gap by encouraging more women to carry out apprenticeships in industry sectors that are traditionally very male-dominated. The company compared the full-time pay of staff in industries with high percentages of male apprentices to that of staff in industries that have high proportions of females, and found there to be a large pay gap. Next year’s National Apprenticeship Week has now been announced, and will be taking place from Monday 9th March to Friday 13th March 2015. More and more young people are now starting apprenticeships, and National Apprenticeship Week will celebrate Apprenticeships and the success of these young people, and the positive impact that they have on businesses and the economy. Minimum Apprentice Wage is Increasing

The Government has announced that from October 2014, all minimum wage brackets will be increasing, including the National Minimum Apprentice Wage. When these new brackets are introduced, the minimum wage for apprentices will increase by 5p an hour, so all apprentices will earn at least £2.73 an hour. If you’re considering an Apprenticeship, this is of course good news! But in reality most apprentices actually earn more than the National Minimum Apprentice Wage.
